Warmest Winter Jacket 2026: Down, Parka or Heated?

Warmest Winter Jacket 2026: Down, Parka or Heated?

Updated: October 2026 · By Sebastiaan, founder of Gløde · 6 min read

Standing still is the real test.

In short: without electricity, the warmest winter jacket is a long, windproof parka with a hood and plenty of insulation. A short down jacket is warmer for its weight but covers less. For hours of standing still, a heated jacket or parka goes one step further. It adds adjustable heat on top of the insulation. A heated vest or heating insert in your own jacket is the lighter route to the same idea.

What makes a jacket warm?

Insulation

Insulation traps still air. Down does that very efficiently for its weight; its quality is expressed as fill power. Values around 600 are considered good, 700 very good and 800 or more excellent. Synthetic insulation is less efficient for its weight, but it keeps insulating when damp and dries faster.

Wind protection

Wind strips away warm air from around your body. A windproof shell, a high collar, a hood and closable cuffs matter more than a few extra grams of filling.

Length and coverage

A jacket that covers your hips and thighs keeps more of you warm. You notice it most on a cold stadium seat. That is the main advantage of a parka over a short puffer.

Activity level

This is the factor most buying guides skip. When you walk briskly, your body produces plenty of heat and a medium jacket is enough. At a market stall, on the sideline or at a bus stop, your body produces much less heat. Even a very warm jacket can only hold on to what is there.

Adjustability

Normal jackets are either too warm or not warm enough as the day changes. Layers help. Active heat that you can turn up or down is the most direct way to adjust.

Type by type

Down jacket

Very warm for its weight and easy to pack. Down loses much of its insulation when it gets wet, so look for a water-resistant outer fabric if you live somewhere damp.

Synthetic insulated jacket

A sensible choice for wet, changeable winters: it keeps insulating when damp and is easy to care for. It is a little heavier and bulkier for the same warmth.

Parka

A long cut, a hood and usually a windproof shell. For standing still in city winters, this is the warmest non-heated style, whether it is filled with down or synthetic insulation.

Wool coat

Smart and comfortable in moderate cold, but less windproof and less warm for its weight than an insulated jacket.

Layers

A fleece or insulated mid-layer under a windproof shell is flexible and ideal when you move a lot. For long periods of standing still, layers alone often fall short.

Heated jacket or parka

Combines insulation with heating panels powered by a 5 V power bank. The key difference: it adds warmth instead of only keeping in what your body produces. The Gløde Pølar heated parka for women reaches up to 60 °C with 6 heat zones.

Heated vest or heating insert

Keep your favourite jacket and add heat underneath. A heated vest like Høgge has 3 heat levels up to 50 °C. Øney is a heating insert you fit in your own jacket. With a 10,000 mAh power bank a vest gives around 3–6 hours of warmth; with 20,000 mAh around 6–12 hours.

Which jacket for which situation?

  • Walking and commuting in dry cold: a down jacket.
  • Wet, windy winters: a synthetic jacket or a parka with a waterproof shell.
  • Standing still for hours (matches, markets, outdoor work): a heated parka, or a heated vest under your parka.
  • You love the jacket you have: add a heated vest or a heating insert.
  • Active sports: layers with a shell.

Frequently asked questions

What is the warmest type of winter jacket?

For standing still in real cold, a long, windproof, insulated parka with a hood is the warmest non-heated type. A heated jacket or parka adds active heat on top. It stays warm even when you are not moving.

Is a down jacket or a parka warmer?

It depends on the build. A parka is a style: long, hooded and usually windproof, often filled with down or synthetic insulation. A short down jacket with high fill power is very warm for its weight. A long parka covers more of you and blocks more wind.

What does fill power mean?

Fill power measures how much space a given amount of down fills. A higher number means more trapped air and more warmth for the same weight. Values of around 600 are considered good, 700 very good and 800 or more excellent.

Is a heated jacket worth it?

It is worth considering if you often stand still outside. Think matches, markets, cycling to work or outdoor jobs in the cold. You can adjust the warmth, and it keeps working when your own body heat is not enough. If you are mostly active, good insulation and layers may be enough.

Heated jacket or down jacket: which is warmer?

A down jacket only keeps in the heat your body produces. A heated jacket adds heat on top of its insulation. When you stand still for long, the heated jacket usually feels warmer. When you are very active, a down jacket may be enough.

How long does a heated jacket stay warm?

That depends on the power bank and heat level. For Gløde vests, a 10,000 mAh power bank gives around 3 to 6 hours of warmth. A 20,000 mAh power bank gives around 6 to 12 hours.

Can I make my own jacket heated?

Yes. A heating insert such as Øney adds electric heat to a jacket you already own. You keep your favourite coat and add adjustable warmth.
