What to wear at 0 degrees?
At around freezing point, clothing choice matters. In Ireland, 0 degrees can feel much colder with wind, damp air or rain. The right outfit keeps you dry, blocks wind and holds warmth where your body needs it most.
The layering principle
| Layer | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Base layer | Move moisture away from the body | Thermal top or technical shirt |
| Insulation layer | Store warmth | Fleece, vest or heated body warmer |
| Outer layer | Block wind, rain and snow | Winter jacket, softshell or waterproof jacket |
Outfit by activity
Walking at 0 degrees
A warm mid-layer and windproof jacket are often enough. Add an extra layer if you will stop for breaks.
Cycling at 0 degrees
Windchill makes the cold feel stronger. Protect chest, hands and neck especially well.
Outdoor work
If you switch between movement and standing still, a vest is practical. A heated version is especially useful during long cold periods.
Waiting or standing still
With little movement, your body produces little heat. Active warmth around the core and hands is often most effective.
When heated clothing makes sense
Heated clothing is useful when normal layers are not enough or if you cool down often. It does not replace layering; it improves it. Also read heated clothing advice and winter advice.
