What to look for
Cooling plate and contact
More plates, or a larger plate at the back and sides of the neck, give a stronger sensation than one small contact spot.
Runtime per mode
This is where spec sheets can mislead. The longest figure on the box usually refers to the lowest fan speed without the plate. With the cooling plate on, the battery drains much faster. Compare the runtime for the mode you will actually use, and consider whether you can top up during the day.
Heating mode
A heating mode reverses the current so the plate warms. It gives local, gentle warmth, which is pleasant on a cool morning or in an air-conditioned office. Look for several levels and an automatic shut-off.
Weight and fit
You wear it for hours, so weight and balance matter. A flexible or hinged band that follows your neck feels better than a rigid one.
Noise and airflow
All types with a fan hum. Check where the air goes in and out. Intakes near long hair are a nuisance. Outlets aimed at your ears sound louder.
Charging and cleaning
