Outdoor work in construction and groundworks means cold, wind, rain and changing levels of physical activity. Without suitable protection, comfort, concentration and safety can all suffer.
Wind and moisture increase cold stress
Wind chill and damp clothing make the body lose heat faster. Cold hands can reduce grip and dexterity when using tools, machinery or materials.
What employers should do
Cold outdoor work should be covered in the risk assessment and safety statement. Practical measures include weather-resistant layers, warm rest areas, task planning, dry spare clothing, gloves and training.
Heated workwear as a core layer
A heated bodywarmer can help during waiting, measuring or lighter tasks when workers are not generating much body heat. It should be worn under suitable weatherproof workwear and must not interfere with required PPE.
See heated workwear for construction and heated bodywarmers.
