What to look for

• Power source: none, a mains adapter, USB or a power bank. Pick what fits where the bed goes.
• Cable: a sturdy sleeve or coiled cable, run along the wall, away from teeth. For a dog that chews, a self-warming mat avoids the cable altogether.
• Room to move off the heat: the heated area should be smaller than the bed, or there should be space next to it, so your dog can choose a cooler spot.
• Washable cover: a removable cover you can wash once the heating element is out. Follow the care label.
• Size: measure your dog lying stretched out and add a little room.

General advice: do not leave your dog alone with a powered bed, pad or blanket switched on. When you are out, a self-warming mat is simpler.

Frequently asked questions

Does a self-warming dog bed really get warm?

It does not make heat itself. A reflective or insulating layer sends your dog's own warmth back, so it feels warmer than a thin bed on a cold floor. For a dog that feels the cold a lot, a powered pad gives more warmth.

Heating pad or heated bed?

A pad goes under the cover of the bed your dog already likes, so you keep that bed. A heated bed has the heating built in. Both need a power source and a cable your dog cannot reach.

Can I use a heated dog mat in the campervan?

A self-warming mat needs nothing. A USB mat can run from the van's USB socket or a power bank, depending on the model, so check what it needs. As at home, do not leave your dog alone in the van with it switched on.

Can my dog use an ordinary heated blanket?

A blanket made for people is not built for claws, digging or chewing. A heated blanket made for dogs is the better fit, with the cable and controller out of reach and room for your dog to move off it. Check the maker's instructions.
