Layering clothes in winter: how to stay genuinely warm

Staying warm is not about wearing as many clothes as possible. Smart layers work better: a breathable base layer, insulation, wind protection and, when needed, active heat.

The three basic layers

A good winter layering system has a breathable base layer, an insulating middle layer and a protective outer layer. The base layer keeps you dry, the middle layer keeps warmth in and the outer layer blocks wind or rain.

1. Base layer
Breathable and not too thick. Helps prevent clamminess.
2. Warmth layer
Fleece, body warmer or heated clothing.
3. Outer layer
Wind and rain protection.

Where does heated clothing fit?

A heated body warmer or jacket works best as a warmth layer close to the body or just under a windproof outer layer. That keeps active warmth around your core. For cold hands, add heated gloves.

Common mistake

Many people wear too many thick layers. Then you sweat while moving and cool down faster when you stop. Better: start breathable, heat where needed and block wind.

Gløde advice

Staying warm is a system: stay dry, retain warmth, block wind and add active heat where cold bothers you most.
